If experimental errors occur, positive control will not yield the correct result. Therefore, investigators can analyze and optimize the procedure without wasting time, effort and money. For example, when plant extract is tested for antimicrobial properties in an experiment with antimicrobial compound, a known antimicrobial containing solution is used as a positive control.


What is Negative Control?

Negative monitoring does not provide a response to treatment. In experiments, negative control should be designed in such a way that it does not produce the desired results of the experiment. In the example above, the paper disc used as a negative control should be soaked with sterile distilled water. In sterile distilled water, there is no antimicrobial agent. Therefore, bacteria can grow without hindrance. If any negative control is detected, it indicates that something is wrong with the experiment.
